These days, one of the most exciting application for LASER technology, is the engraving of photographs.  Many photographs can be scanned in and put into a format that will engrave on a variety of materials. This opens up a variety of opportunities.  The image can be scanned the image in and use an image processing software program like Photoshop or Corelpaint to adjust brightness and contrast.  You will want to brighten the light colors and darken the dark colors.  You can also use a sharpening filter to sharpen the image.  Next, you will want to select a halftone pattern.  A halftone is a series of dots arranged in a specific preset pattern.  For best results, use a line frequency that is greater than 20, but less than 100.  Small dots look better on some surfaces and large dots look better on others.  There are also software packages available that were developed for laser engraving.
